Naturalization is the process of obtaining US Citizenship. There are various ways of obtaining Citizenship, most of which require the process of obtaining Legal Permanent Resident status first. Depending on how you obtained Legal Permanent Status, there are time restraints and conditions that must be met before applying. Although it could be strenuous, it can also be very rewarding once you become a US Citizen.

To apply for Naturalization, you must have meet the following requirements.

Be at least 18 years old at the time of filing

Be a permanent resident (have a “Green Card”) for at least 5 years. (exceptions apply: military, marriage to US Citizen, etc.);

Show that you have lived for at least 3 months in the state or USCIS district where you apply.

Demonstrate continuous residence in the US for at least 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing. (exceptions apply: military, marriage to US Citizen, etc.);

Show that you have been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months out of the 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing (exceptions apply: military, marriage to US Citizen, etc.);

Be able to read, write, and speak basic English. (Exceptions apply: Age, disability, etc.)

Have a basic understanding of U.S. history and government (civics).

Be a person of good moral character.

Demonstrate an attachment to the principles and ideals of the U.S. Constitution.
